We put together our recommended essential maternity capsule wardrobe to help you navigate those nine months in style!
That growing belly! For all the first time moms out there let us just warn you that your belly will keep growing! Although it may seem like you have a bit of a bump at 14 weeks, you will look back and laugh at those pictures; by 30 weeks it may be hard to believe it could get bigger and then at 40 weeks you’ll just know that the baby has got to come out!
Here at Maia Moda, we recommend setting the foundation with a maternity capsule wardrobe and then you can add / borrow as needed. We hope it helps! We have also released a breastfeeding capsule wardrobe. Be sure to check it out here.
Below are the essentials:
- 2 - 3 Maternity / Nursing Bras
- 2 -3 Maternity Dresses
- 5 Maternity Tops
- 2 Leggings
- 1 Maternity Jean
- 2 -3 Blazers / Sweaters
As an overall tip look for opportunities to buy maternity pieces that are also conducive to breastfeeding too (psssst Maia Moda’s pieces are all dual use :)). You’ll thank us when the baby comes and the last thing you have time for is to shop for breastfeeding clothes.
Maternity / Nursing Bras
It’s not just the belly that is growing, your boobs tend to gain one or two sizes and it can start in the early stages of pregnancy. Our biggest advice would be to buy a maternity bra that have a built in nursing mechanism. Why not get more use out of it? However, don’t go too crazy all at once. Your boob size will continue to shift throughout pregnancy and postpartum so space out your purchases where you can. Bravado has some great options and be sure to check out Boob design as well for their organic, sustainable fabric options.
Maternity Dresses are the best! There is nothing better than slipping on a beautiful maxi dress to show off your bump. For the first / second trimester we love the form fitting dresses that really highlight the bump, but by the third trimester you may want to start opting for more of the flowy look to minimize the focus on it’s size! Haha I guess some of us got tired of people telling us like we looked like we could pop any day (with four weeks to go!!). We love the Gaia Dress and this one from the Hatch.
Starting with a good 4 -5 maternity friendly tops is a good start. If you buy them early, make sure there is lots of extra room to grow in them or they will soon be outgrown. We would recommend to use your own wardrobe of tops for as long as you can before you make the switch to maternity friendly ones as it’s hard to tell just how much you'll grow at the beginning. Some basics from the Gap are always a great go-to and for a more elevated look check out our Maia Top.
Maternity leggings are a must! Have a minimum of 2 on hand to get you through the weekends and lounging around at home. Their comfort can’t be beat and they easily grow with you throughout the entire pregnancy. We can’t get enough of the Splendid brand!
A great pair of maternity jeans is a must. You’ll need at least 1 pair, probably more. It is pleasantly surprising to find that so many jean brands have maternity options available. Personally, it was a little bit of a splurge to get a pair of maternity DL jeans, but now that I have lent them to two girlfriends and am on my second I know they were well worth it!
Blazers / Sweaters
Blazers and long Sweaters are the perfect layering pieces. And don’t worry if they don’t do up anymore - that’s part of the bump charm :) No need to buy maternity specific pieces in this case, just buy a size up and you’ll be surprised how far it will take you. Anything by Vince is a great option (although an investment) or a beautiful blazer from J.Crew can really pull an outfit together.
Pregnancy can be a long haul with 40 weeks of gestation. Although it may be tempting to skimp on pregnancy clothes, you’ll find that the pieces you acquire will get so much use. We encourage you to celebrate your gorgeous pregnancy glow and show off your amazing life-giving body. And don’t wait too long to start stocking up, your current wardrobe will not get you through the full nine months so you might as well buy sooner to get some more uses. (And to avoid that awkward belly out look). Happy Shopping!
